Original Artist: Caylen Balmain

Since 1992 I've studied and worked in the fields of printing, design, illustration, and printmaking. After college, where I studied lithography, photography, illustration, and graphic design, I took several jobs in the printing industry. After spending three years as the art director for a national magazine, I started a design business where I dabbled in lithography, always hoping to make it my main focus. In June 2007 I completed the first three lithographs of my Nevada County series.

Creating the prints themselves is a fun and elaborate process. It begins with pinpointing a location I wish to illustrate. I take a series of photographs, capturing various angles. Once the proper photograph is selected, I render a pencil-drawn illustration often making alterations to emphasize the specific landmark or icon. After that I scan the illustration into my computer and render it a second time. At this stage, re-illustrating in a program called Adobe Illustrator, I can refine the illustration down to the most minute detail. This process can take several months.
